Doha's Grand Mall Hypermarket is to be officially renamed 'Asian Town' as part of the retail development's expansion plans, part of its bid to enhance its appeal to the Gulf state's low-paid foreign workers, according to a report by Doha News.

A spokesperson for developer Ibin Ajayan Projects confirmed the new official name will be 'Asian Town', who said the rebranding reflected the customer demographic it was targeting.

“Our vision is to make it a destination for shopping and for dinner for the laborer community,” the spokesperson was quoted as saying.

Opened two years ago, the complex in the city's industrial area already contains cinema screens, a cricket pitch, amphitheatre and shopping centre. The new retail section being added as part of the expansion plan will include 240 shops selling clothing, glasses and coffee at affordable prices and will open later this month, the Doha News report added.

A new cinema and an outlet mall will also be part of the new development.
