Saudi Arabia to get cinemas

Contrary to popular belief, cinemas are not banned in Saudi Arabia, according to a cultural official.

The only reason movies were not publicly shown was because of “ignorant investors” who wrongly believed they were not allowed, Fahd Al Tamimi, from the Saudi Arabia Producers and Distributers Association said in a statement quoted by local media.

The Ministry of Culture and Information had the power to issue pre-approval for movies to be screened publicly, after the contents had been vetted, he said.

Al Tamimi said the association would contact Saudi businessmen and urge them to invest in cinemas.
